Activities and Clubs

Academic Bowl: Students compete with other programs serving deaf students from around the region in a variety of academic disciplines

After School Work Program: Students have the opportunity to earn money while acquiring skills necessary for future employment . Employment opportunities are offered both on and off campus

ASL Festival: Includes poetry, drama and a chance to compete in the J Phillips ASL Regional competition

Close Up: Provides ASD students with a trip to Washington, DC to learn first-hand about our government

Drama Club: ASD student learn the art of acting and play production, and perform for fellow students, as well as the community

Fly Fishing: Staffed by volunteers from the Connecticut Fly Fishing Associations, this program teaches students the fundamentals of fly fishing and ends with a day-long fishing adventure

French Exchange: ASD has a long-standing exchange program with the Paris School for the Deaf, the school with which one of our founders, Laurent Clerc was affiliated

Growing Emerging Leaders (GEL): This program involves teambuilding activities in order for students to increase their ability to work together and feel connected to one another. The ultimate goal is for each individual to become a confident and self-motivated leader

Girl Scout/Brownies: Participation in these organizations is open to our female Elementary and Junior/Senior High students

Junior Connecticut Association of the Deaf: Provides students a forum to discuss issues relevant to the Deaf Community and to develop community service projects

Martin Luther King Society: In the spirit of Dr. King, this is a group that explores issues around diversity and working together

Math Counts: Students compete with other programs serving deaf students. This is an annual event sponsored by NTID

Peace Jam: Students partner with students from other schools to explore current issues and events

Robotics: Students join students from the University of Hartford High School Magnet School to build robots and compete regionally/nationally

Soap Box Derby: Students race for a chance to compete at the National Championships in Akron, Ohio

Student Forum: Provides leadership opportunities and coordinates with the Connecticut Student Forum

Yearbook: ASD students produce the Yearbook
